2025 Annual Performance – “The Playground of Little Jumbo”: A Picture Book Musical Presented by: Hong Kong Children’s Musical Theatre (HKCMT)

This year’s annual performance by HKCMT is adapted from the original picture book The Playground of Little Jumbo by local artist Lam Kin Choi, which won the BRAW AMAZING BOOKSHELF honor at this year's Bologna Children's Book Fair Ragazzi Awards in Italy.

"Have you ever thought of a city because of a tree?"

Little Ko and his classmates Ah Kam and Ah K go on a fi eld trip to Victoria Peak with their teacher. On the way up the Peak Tram, it suddenly stops, and as the scenery outside the window tilts and spins, they seem to be swept into a torrent of time and space. Little Ko, who doesn't like adventures, unexpectedly embarks on a mountain expedition. Is it a frightening forbidden land, or a hidden playground?

Children who’ve grown up with screens in hand fi nd themselves offl ine and searching for a way back — by stepping into nature. Along the way, they encounter native and foreign trees, familiar yet unknown plants, insects, birds, and animals, discovering not only the rhythms of Hong Kong’s fl ora and history but also, piece by piece, their sense of self. From being lost to learning to grow, the journey becomes one of transformation.

In tiny Hong Kong, you can fi nd trees from all around the world — and Hong Kong plants have made their way far beyond the city. Trees take root on this island, bringing life to lonely hills. A tree over a hundred years old can still be considered young. Unlike humans, they don’t leave easily.
